5 Ways to Get Rid of a Headache Without Medication
Ever had a headache or even worse, a migraine? Then you know these can range from being a nuisance at best, and debilitating at worst. You may not always have a headache pill conveniently available, or like me, you might prefer to avoid taking medication wherever possible. Whatever your position, here are 5 simple ways to relieve headaches simply, naturally.
1. Drink Ginger Tea
Ginger is amazingly effective in relieving migraines. Finely chop or grate 2 x tablespoons of Ginger and add to 3 cups of hot water. Let it sit for at least 5 minutes and then pour into a cup, (being sure to use a sieve or filter to remove pieces of ginger), and drink away. Some people use ginger-tea bags, but they’re nowhere near as effective as fresh ginger. If the taste is too strong, add a teaspoon of honey.
2. Hot or Cold Towel
If your headache is tension-related, or if your head and neck feel like they’re contracting all the time, then you might be suffering from anxiety, lack of sleep or stress. Prepare a bowl with hot water, dip a towel in it and wring it out, then place it on the back of your neck or your forehead. It will help relieve and relax tight muscles.
If you are suffering from a migraine or cluster headaches, do the same as instructed about, except only use cold water instead of hot water. The cooling effect will cause blood vessels to constrict and reduce blood flow to the head, and ease your pain.
3. Drink Coffee
Research has proven that Caffeine reduces swelling in blood vessels, and can therefore reduce the frequency and intensity of headaches. So enjoy your java – the Doctor says it’s fine.
4. Soak Your Feet
For relief from a throbbing headache, simply soak your feet in a tub filled with hot water. Add Mustard powder for a more effective relief. After about 30 minutes, you can take your feet out and dry off.
5. Head Massage
Before you start, make sure you drink minimum 250ml of water.
Begin by placing your thumbs on either side of the bridge of your nose (where it meets the eyes) and squeeze for 10 seconds about 4-5 times, squeeze firmly but not enough that you cause yourself pain.
Rotate your thumbs so they’re facing down and the thumb-pads are under your eyebrows. Press upwards and hold for 10 seconds. Repeat 4-5 times.
Place your three middle fingers of each hand on your temples and apply steady pressure for 10 seconds while massaging the area in circular motions.
