8 Warning Signs You May Have Gluten Intolerance

Michael Massey | October 11, 2017

Gluten-free diets have recently gained a lot of interest, often as a path to weight-loss and also to promote healthier eating. However many people have a gluten intolerance and are unaware of that. It is certainly a good idea to be tested for food intolerances, and if you notice any of these 8 indicators, it could be a sign that your body is sensitive to gluten.

1. Skin Problems

People with gluten intolerance tend to suffer from a variety of skin conditions after consuming gluten. This can present as anything from a flush on the skin to unexplained rashes or acne. The rashes most often present on the backs of knees, elbows, the back, buttocks and neck.

2. Bloating

After eating food that contains gluten your stomach may bloat, causing discomfort or even stomach aches.

3. Numbness in the Extremities and Joint Pain

Many people do not attribute these symptoms to gluten sensitivity, but they can be highly effective warnings.
The numbness can feel like your limb has “fallen asleep” or “pins & needles”. Joint pain will resemble that of arthritis and is a result of local inflammation.

4. Diarrhea, Gas and Constipation

These are all symptoms typical of many food intolerances. If you want to verify that they are gluten related, keep a food journal and pay close attention to when these symptoms occur.

5. Mood Swings

Gluten intolerance can result in depression, anxiety and other mood swings that you cannot explain.
If an interruption of sleep is not the cause of these swings then you can reasonably question if gluten is the cause.

6. Hormonal Issues

Gluten sensitivity can cause hormonal problems. Current research is exploring the connection between gluten sensitivity and polycystic ovarian syndrome, PMS, and fertility.

7. Auto-immune Disease

Coeliac itself is an auto-immune disease, but gluten sensitivity often appears in conjunction with other auto-immune diseases such as; rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, scleroderma, myasthenia gravis, ulcerative colitis, psoriasis, or multiple sclerosis.

8. Neurological Issues

Gluten sensitivity can result in neurological interferences such as a sudden loss of balance, lack of co-ordination or episodes of dizziness. These symptoms normally present about an hour after consuming gluten.
