What better place to start than with the go-to health trend of 2018 – keto. This book lets you dip your toes into the diet using a carbs scale to group recipes, ranging from the “keto zone” (practically no carbs) to the “sustain zone” (enough carbs to maintain weight). So while you’ll find plenty of super low-carb ideas, there’s also ample space devoted to heartier dishes such as lasagne and chicken nuggets.

But few boast as many contributors in doctor, professor and researcher roles as this title from one of Australia’s leading research agencies. Like it says on the cover, the book addresses a wide array of issues related to gut health, from coeliac disease to irritable bowel syndrome. Rather than counting carbs or calories, recipes are more concerned with fibre, which the authors say is key to maintaining a healthy gut. This book may not make for great conversation over brunch with friends, but if you want meal plans to keep your digestion happy, this is where it’s at.

 

Good for: Your grandparents

You’ll also find recipes for every superfood of the moment and then some, from sauerkraut to turmeric.

 

Good for: The friend who’s always looking for the latest trending diet

It’s the type of book that makes you think to yourself, yes, I do want to make bircher muesli decorated with papaya cut into stars. I do want to make my own almond milk in mason jars, or porridge sprinkled with edible flower petals. Interspersed between food photos are shots of Ella herself – sitting atop a Volkswagon in a flowy dress, smiling down at a green smoothie at the beach while pensively looking into the distance – just to remind you it’s not just a diet, it’s a whole lifestyle.

 

Good for: Anyone who wants to live their best Insta life

Low-fat versions of family favourites such as beef stroganoff sit side by side with zucchini pasta and and cauliflower rice, alongside vegie-laden Asian stir-fries and fruit-heavy desserts. With pages filled with interesting spins on conventional recipes, it’s hard to go wrong with a cookbook like this.

 

Good for: Losing weight the old-fashioned way

It’s a philosophy you don’t exactly need a book to follow, but the cute watercolour drawings and recipe commentary makes the book feel personal enough to keep you coming back.

 

Good for: Anyone who wants to eat better but cringes at the thought of diets

Brownies or ricotta bakes, anyone?
